MNO Acoustic Bat Monitoring Program:
-
It is a community science program for MNO Citizens to help monitor endangered bat species
-
Monitoring involves setting up an acoustic bat monitoring unit on private property to a tree, fence, flagpole or similar structure
-
The device remains outside for a period of 4 days, then gets exchanged with the next volunteer to repeat the same process
-
Training and reference materials, developed in partnership with the Toronto Zoo, will be shared during an online training session on April 28th, 2026 (the event will be recorded for those unable to attend)
-
Volunteers will receive a $25 Walmart gift card for participating and a personalized report highlighting the bat species detected
-
Data collected will be shared with the Toronto Zoo’s Native Bat Conservation Program to help advance research and conservation efforts of endangered bat species in Ontario
-
In the fall there is a virtual volunteer appreciation event featuring a presentation from the Toronto Zoo, an overview of the monitoring findings, and door prizes!
